For Kids: The Marquis de Lafayette was a very young man when he heard about the American Revolution. He chose to leave his very comfortable life in France to come to America and volunteer his service.
Washington had so few officers with an understanding of the European style of fighting that he immediately accepted and appointed him as an officer in the Continental Army. Lafayette proved Washington right, and became one of the heroes of the Revolution.
