Naval Battles & John Paul Jones

During the American revolution the colonists decided that they needed a Navy as well as an army. They wanted a Navy to protect colonial ships as well as capture British ships.

But where could they get the ships? Mostly they just put a bunch of cannons on a merchant ship and sent it out to fight.

This worked surprisingly well. That is because there were many very good American sailors. One of the most famous is John Paul Jones.
